Pharmacology
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| HISTAMINE RECEPTOR REVIEW | H1 receptors: brain, skin, bronchi, and blood vessels. H stands for histamine. |
| ACTION OF HISTAMINE | Keep us alert; influences development of urticaria, angioedema, bronchoconstriction and widespread vasodilation. |
| ANTIHISTAMINE/H-1 ANTAGONIST | Reverse urticaria and angioedema but don't relax bronchoconstriction or reverse vasodilation. |
| Dimetapp | Brompheniramine; sedating H1 blocker |
| Cetirizine | Zyrtec; sedating H1 blocker |
| Chlorpheniramine | Chlortrimeton; sedating H1 blocker |
| Clemastine | Tavist; sedating H1 blocker |
| Cyproheptadine | Periactin; sedating H1 blocker |
| Dimenhydrinate | Dramamine; sedating H1 blocker; DOC motion sickness |
| Diphenhydramine | Benadryl; sedating H1 blocker; DOC urticaria and hypersensitivity reactions; when someone has an allergy to a drug that MUST be given benadryl may be prescribed w/ corticosteroid. |
| Hydroxyzine | Atarax; sedating H1 blocker; DOC severe itching uncontrolled other methods |
| Uses of H-1, sedating blockers | Allergic rhinitis; urticaria; hypersensitivity reactions; itching; motion sickness; antitussives; allergy prevention; parkinson's; drug-induced parkinsonism; |
| PARKINSONS AND ANTIHISTAMINES | Dopamine and acetylcholine are inversely related. Antihistamines have anti-cholinergic effects. If acetylcholine decreases/dopamine increases. Want a drug like benadryl crosses the BBB so we might want to use if for Parkinsons. |
| PERIACTIN | Appetite stimulant adults and prevents cluster headaches-but NOT APPROVED FOR THESE. Effective severe itching uncontrolled other methods or other typical antihis uses. |
| DOC DYSTONIA | 50 OR 100 MG IM IN ADULT PATIENT-effects will almost be immediate |
| COGENTIN | DOC DRUG INDUCED PARKINSONISM |
| PRECAUTIONS ANTIHISTAMINES | Don't drive car, bike; machinery; plane -none before 24 to 48 hrs before; causes lack of coordination. |
| SIDE EFFECTS | Drowsiness; hyperactivity in elderly or young |
