What is Bowen's Reaction Series? The order of crystallization of intrusive rocks.
Bowen's Reaction Series - order of silicates Olivine -> Pyroxene -> Amphibole -> Biotite Mica -> Muscovite Mica + Feldspar + Quartz
Bowen's Reaction Series - order of classes of rocks Ultramafic -> Basaltic (Mafic) -> Andesitic -> Granitic (Felsic)
Bown's Reaction Series - order of plegioclase feldspars Calcium Rich -> Sodium Rich
What is rhyolite? The extrusive equivalent to granite
What are basaltic rocks composed of? Mg and Fe
What is the most common extrusive rock? Basalt
What is the composition of basalt? Plagioclase feldspar and pyroxene
What is peridotite composed of? Olivine and pyroxene
What is detritus? Material eroded from other rocks.
What are the two types of sedimentary rocks? Detrital and chemical
What does Phaneritic mean? Coarse-grained
What does Aphanitic mean? Fine-grained
What does Porphyritic mean? Large crystals are embedded in smaller crystals
What is conglomerate? Rounded detritic sedimentary rock
What is breccia? Jagged detritic sedimentary rock
What is coquina? Loosely cemented shells and shell fragments
What does foliated mean? A metamorphic rock that has been compressed to show layers
What does disseminated mean? Equally spread ore (as opposed to vein deposits)
