Terms for chapter twenty-one section one: Modern Biology

| biomes | very larg terrestrial ecosystems that contain a number of smaller but related ecosystems within them. |
| tundra | a cold and largely treeless biome that forms a continuous belt across north america, europe,and asia. |
| permafrost | a permanently frozen layer of soil under the surface soil under the surface; characterizes the tundra. |
| tropical forests | occur near the equator in the region known as the tropics. stable temperatures and abundant rainfall make tropical rainforests the most productive biome type. |
| canopy | a continuous layer formed by treetops, which shades the forest floor. |
| epiphytes | small plants that live on the branches of tall trees. (ie: mosses, orchids, etc.) |
| coniferous trees | trees that bear seeds in cones and tend to be evergreen. |
| deciduous trees | trees that shed their leaves each year. |
| temperate deciduous forests | trees that loose all of their leaves in the fall and regrow them each spring. |
| taiga | a forested biome dominated by coniferous trees such as pine, firs, and spruces. |
| temperate grasslands | a biome that is dominated by a variety of grasses. they usually form in the interior of continents. |
| savannas | tropical or temperate grasslands that have scattered deciduous trees and shrubs. |
| chaparral | a biome that is dominated by dense, spiny shrubs and has scattered clumps of coniferous trees. |
| deserts | areas that recievean average of less than 25 c of rainfall per year. |
