terrestrial biomes

| biome | very large terrestrial ecosystems that contain a number of smaller but related ecosystems within them. |
| tundra | cold and largely treeless biome that forms a continuous belt across northern North America, Europe, and Asia- largest and northernmost biome, covering 1/5 of the world's land surface. |
| permafrost | permanently frozen layer of soil under the surface of a tundra |
| tropical forest | located near the equator, between 23.5 N and 23.5 S (the tropics) includes parts of Asia, Africa, South/ Central America. only have 2 seasons- wet or dry. |
| canopy | continuous layer of treetops which shades the forest floor |
| epiphyte | characterization for plants like mosses, orchids, and bromeliads. non-parasitic/autotrophs, use support from other organisms |
| coniferous tree | bear seeds in cones, tend to be evergreen |
| deciduous tree | shed their leaves each year |
| temperate deciduous forest | trees that lose all of their leavese in the fall and regrow them each spring. stretch across eastern North America, Europe, parts of Asia/ Southern Hemisphere |
| taiga | dominated by coniferous trees, south of tundra and north of temperate regions, "boreal forest", stretches across large areas of northern Europe, Asia, and North America between 50 N and 60 N |
| temperate grassland | usually form in the interior of continents, about the same latitude as temperate deciduous forests. rich and fertile soil but too dry to rain much or support trees. |
| savanna | tropical or temperate grasslands that have scattered deciduous trees and shrubs. supports lots of herbivores. Africa, Australia, South America. rainfall= desert< savanna< tropical/ temperate forest |
| chaparral | dominated by dense, spiny shrubs and has scattered clumps of coniferous trees. mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers w/ periodic fires. located in middle latitudes, about 30 north and south of equator. found primarily in coastal regions. |
| desert | receive less than an average odf 25 cm of rain each year. mostly humid and hot, some can have cool winters. temperatures fall rapidly at night. |
