Discovery of cells

QuestionAnswer
What did Robert Hooke discover? first discovered cells in 1665 when looking at a piece of cork
what did antonie van leeuwenhoek discover? observed first living cells under a microscope
What did matthias Schleiden do? concluded that all plants are made of cells
whar did Theodore Schwann do? concluded that all animals are made of cells
what did Rudolf Virchow do? concluded that all cells come from pre-existing cells
What are the three parts of the cell theory? 1) all living things are made of cells 2) cells are the basic unit of structure and function in an organism 3) new cells are produced from existing cells
cell specialization? cells in organisms are specialized to perform different tasks
what are three examples of cell specialization? red blood cell , muscle cell , stomata
How to small cells function? they function more effectively than large cells because they have a higher surface-area-to-volume ratio than larger cells
what happens as a cell size increases? the volume increases faster than the surface area
What are the exceptions of the cell size affect on the muscle cells? has more than one nucleus, allowing genetic information to be spread around the cell
what is the exception to cell size in nerve cells? they are long and skinny so the cytoplasm is always close to the plasma membrane; diffusion is still rapid
What do all cells have? a cell membrance or cell wall , genetic material , ribosomes , cytoplasm ( the interior porting the the cell including cytosol & organelles )
What are the characteristics of a prokaryotic cell? they have genetic material , no nucleus , no organelles ( except ribosomes ) , smallest cellular organisms. ex. bacteria
what are the characteristics of eukaryotic cells? more complex and organized , true nucleus , organelles , 10x bigger than prokaryotes ex. plants & animals
what are proteins integrated into? the membrane
what is the membrane made out of? phospholipids
where may carbohydrates be attached to in the membrance/ to phospholipids or proteins
what are enzymes and what do they do? they are catalysts. They reduce activation energy and speed up reaction rates.
what are cell surface markers? they are used for identifying cells
what are receptor proteins used for? recognizing and binding substances outside the cell
What are transport proteins used for? to help substances move across the cell membrane
What do plant cells have? chloroplast ( where photosynthesis occurs ) , cell walls , large vacuole
what do animal cells NOT have? cell walls , chloroplast

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
