If a man's infertile (sperm is in too little in quantity or too weak to swim to uterus), what method can he take in order to have a baby? artificial insemination (AI)
Ante natal care involves the mother having great quantities of which nutrients? calcium, iron, carbohydrate, protein
Why shouldn't the mother smoke during pregnancy? nicotine and carbon monoxide cross the placenta and can result in premature or underweight babies
During labour, which part of the female reproductive system contract? the muscles in the uterus wall
When the placenta comes away from the uterus wall and is pushed out of the vagina, it is called the? afterbirth
What happens to the amnion and amniotic fluid during labour? The amnion breaks allowing amniotic fluid to escape
Why is breast milk better than formula milk? It contains antibodies which gives the baby passive immunity to the diseases that the mother has had recently
Which hormone stimulates the development of a follicle inside the ovary abd the secretion of oestrogen? FSH
Which hormone travels to the ovary in the blood, stimulating ovulation and formation of yellow body? Luteinising hormone (LH)
The remaining follicle cells left behind in the ovary after ovulation forms a... yellow body
The function of progesterone? thickening and maintaining the lining of the uterus wall, and prevent it breaking down
Which gland produces hormones that stimulate the sex organ during puberty? Pituitary gland
A small plastic device that contains hormones and is fitted inside the woman's uterus to prevent sperm passing through it IUD (Intra-Uterine Device)
How does the 'pill' works? It contains oestrogen and progesterone which prevents the ovary releasing egg by inhibiting the production of FSH by pituitary
When the woman stops producing egg (stops menstruating), she is in her... menopause
What is vasectomy? an operation which the man's sperm tubes are cut and tied so he won't be able to produce any sperm during ejaculation
Methods of birth control prevent pregnancy by: stop the sperm from reaching the egg, stops the egg from being made, or stop the fertilised egg from implanting and developing in the uterus
HIV stands for? Human immunodeficiency virus
What does the HIV virus do? Why is HIV virus so dangerous? It destroys lymphocytes leading to a weakening of the immune system. This makes people unable to fight of minor infections and diseases- leading to death
A sexually transmitted disease caused by a small, spherical bacterium living inside the moist lining of the male or female reproductive tracts Gonorrhoea
