PassiveCellTransport

Cells use passive transport

QuestionAnswer
Requires how much energy? None
When is facilitated diffusion needed? When molecules cant diffuse rapidly through the cell membrane.
What structure in the cell membrane makes facilitated diffusion possible? The Carrier Protein.
Whats the difference between facilitated diffusion and ion channels? Ion channels cant difuse across the lipid bilayer without assistance.
If you put a drop of blood into sea water what would happen? and why? It would shrivel up because the salt content causes the molecules to difuse the water.
What is turgor pressure? Pressure that water molecules exert against the cell wall.
what is plasmolysis? When cells shrink away from the cell wall and pressure is lost.
What is diffusion? The movement of substances to higher concentration gradient to lower.
What determines what passes through the membrane lipid bilayer or go to the protein pore? They size, and type of the cell.
What is diffusion of water across the cell membrane? osmosis.
What is hypotonic? When the concentration outside the cell is lower the inside the cytosol. Water difuses into the cell.
What is hypertonic? When the concentration outside the cell is higher then the concentration in the cytosol. Water difuses out.
What is isotonic? When the concentration of the solutes outside and iside of the cell are equal. Water difuses in and out at equal rates.
What helps to regulate the intake of water? Does it require energy? Contractive vacuoles. yes or they can pump solutes out of the cell.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
