Testosterone A hormone produced by the testes, that stimulates the development of secondary sexual characteristics in males and the development of sperm cells
Mitochondria A cell each sperm has which releases energy to power swimming by the tail
Womb Is another name of uterus which is a muscular chamber with a soft lining in which the fetus develops
Implantation The embedding of an embryo into the linning of the uterus
Orgasm The felling of pleasure during sexual intercourse
Zygote A fertilised egg
Oestrogen A hormone secreted by the ovaries that stimulates the development of secondary sexual characteristics in the females and helps to control the menstrual cycle
Acrosome A part contains enzymes that are released during fertilization, in the sperm’s head
Spermatozoa Another name for sperm or sperm cells which are the male gametes
Embryo The early stage of a human as it develops from a fertilized egg
Passive immunity Means that the child has the mother’s antibodies in the blood
Placenta The organ that connects an embryo to its mother and through which it receives food and oxygen and removes carbon dioxide and chemical waste
Ante-natal care Care before birth
Gestation period The period of thime between fertilisation and birth, which in humans is 9 months
Umbilical cord The cord connecting the placenta to the fetus. It contains two umbilical arteries and a vein
Vulva The outer opening of the vagina
Cervix The ring of muscle at the lower end of the uterus
Fertilisation The fusion of the male and female sex cells which are sperm and egg, to form a zygote that grows into a new individual
Fetus A stage during development of a baby when all the maijor organs are recognisable
Gametes Sex cells with the haploid number of chromosomes
