lab 7 tissues quiz

animal and plant tissues

QuestionAnswer
what are the two functions of parenchyma? photosynthesis and storage of water and food.
which plant tissue is thin-walled and roughly round? parenchyma.
which plant tissue is elongated with persistent protoplasm and unevenly thickened cell walls? collenchyma.
what is the function of collenchyma? supports elongated regions of the plant.
which plant tissue is uniformly thick cell-walled? sclerenchyma.
what is the function of sclerenchyma? support. the fibers are used to make linen, rope and burlap.
what are the four vertebrate tissues? epithelial, connective, muscle and nervous.
where is epithelial tissue located? lining cells and body surfaces, walls of blood vessels
what are the 2 main functions of epithelial tissue? protect underlying tissues from water loss and injury and control materials crossing the tissue.
what does squamous mean? flat, like fried eggs
what does columnar mean? rectangular, tall and narrow
what does cuboidal mean? equal length, width and height
what does simple mean? single layer
stratified? multi layered
pseudo stratified appears to have several layers but only consists of one single layer
what are the 4 types of connective tissues? adipose, blood, hyaline cartilage and bone.
where is adipose tissue located? scattered throughout body
what are the 2 functions of adipose tissue? stores fat in adipose cells, pads and insulates the body
where is blood tissue located? blood vessels
where is hyaline cartilage found? in skeletal joints
what is the function of hyaline cartilage? resilience and support
where is bone tissue located? skeleton
what is the main purpose of bone tissue? to provide strength
what are the 3 types of muscle tissues? smooth, cardiac and skeletal
what does stria mean? a stripe or line in tissue
where is striated tissue seen? in skeletal muscle tissue
what are intercalated disks? junctions between cardiac muscle cells designed for rapid cell-to-cell communication
what is actin and myosin and which tissue is it found in? protein filaments found in eukaryotic cells and abundant in skeletal muscle tissue
where is smooth muscle tissue found? uterus and intenstines
what does smooth muscle tissue do? line the walls of gut and blood vessels
where is skeletal muscle tissue found? attached to skeleton
what is skeletal muscle tissue function? contract
where is cardiac muscle tissue found and what does it do? heart; contract as a unit
what is a neuron? nerve cell
what is a dendrite? thin extension from cell body of neuron
where is nervous tissue found? brain and spinal cord
what does nervous tissue do? transmit impluses
most reactions in cells are controlled by proteins called.... enzymes
what is a reacting molecule? substrate
