Immunity Hist

Innate and Adaptive Immunity

QuestionAnswer
Self Immunity Molecules that are normally present in the body and expressed at the surface of cells an are incorporated into the cell membrane.
Non-Self Immunity Molecules that are not normally present in the body. Molecules that are associated in bacteria and viruses.
Histompatibility Molecules and cells that are compatible or normal to the body.
Antigen Any substance that is recognized as foreign to the body.
Antibody Proteins secreted by immune system cells that tag antigens for destruction.
Innate Immunity Doesnt require prior exposure to antigen.
First Line of defense of Innate Immunity Skin and lining of G.I, respiratory, and Urinary tracts.
Second Line of defense of Innate Immunity and Neutrophils. Inflammation. Neutrophils attracted to bacteria by chemicals that disable bacteria using free radicals and ingest bacteria. Large numbers of neutrophils accumulate in the form of pus and die off quickly.
Macrophages Innate Immunity Secretes cytokines that help attract more neutrophils to bacteria site and they clean up the pus.
Natural Killer Lymphocytes Innate Immunity - come from bone marrow - programmed to recognize virus infected cells and tumors. - constitues 5 to 10% of circulating lymphocytes -When stimulated the release perforins that are injected in harmful cells membranes and create holes. Enzymes degrade
NK lymphocytes Innate immunity continued the DNA and are interseted into the harmful cell. -Doesnt depend on prior exposure to harmful cells.
Cell Mediated Immune Response (Acquired) Mediated by T lymphocytes that kill by direct contact and produces cytotoxic T-lymphocytes, activated macrophages, and cytokines in response to an antigen.
Humoral Mediated Immune Response (Acquired) Mediated by B lymphocytes that transform into plasma cells (secrete specific antibodies) and produces antibody molecules in response to an antigen.
Macrophages (Acquired/Antigen Presenting cells) Take an antigen processes and presents a polypeptide sequence to lymphocytes (B and T cells)
Types of T cells/and B cells 3 T cells Natural Killer cells kill foreign cells w/o prior exposure. T Helper cells provide secretions to other lymphocytes. Cytotoxic T cells are informed and act to kill an antigen B cells informed and activated transform into plasma cells.
Plasma Cells Derived from B lymphocytes and develop extensive RER to make an antibody for a specific antigen. The antibody secreted depends upon the B cell being a secretion of a T helper cell.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
