Igneous Rocks

TermDefinition
extrusive rock Igneous rock formed from lava that erupted onto Earth's surface.
intrusive rock Igneous rock that formed when magma hardened beneath Earth’s surface.
basalt A dark, dense, igneous rock with a fine texture, found in oceanic crust (most common extrusive rock).
granite A usually light-colored rock that is found in continental crust (most common intrusive rock).
porphyritic texture Intrusive rocks that have large crystals scattered on a background of much smaller crystals.
