ecosystem All the living and nonliving things in an environment.

population All the members of a single type of living thing in an ecosystem.
habitat The home of living things.
producer An organism such as a plant that makes its own food from water, air, and sunlight.
consumer An organism that eats other organisms such as producers and consumers.
food chain A series of organisms that depend on one another for food.
decomposer An organism that breaks down dead plant and animal material.
food web Several chains that are connected.
energy pyramid A diagram that shows how energy moves through an ecosystem.
carbon dioxide and oxygen cycles The process of passing oxygen and carbon dioxide from one population to another in both water and land habitats.
predator An animal that hunts other animals for food.
prey The animals that the predators eat.
scavenger An animal that gets its food from dead organisms.
parasite An organism that lives on or inside another organism or host.
host An organism that a parasite lives on or inside.
