Chapter 2 - How Animals Grow and Change

TermMeaning
embryo A developing animal before it is born or hatched
nymph A stage in an insect life cycle between egg and adult that looks like an adult, but has no wings
larva A young animal that has a different shape than the adult
pupa The stage in the insect life cycle between larva and adult
amphibian An animal with a backbone that lives part of its life in water and part on land
gills The parts of fish and tadpoles that are used to take in oxygen from water
tadpole A very young frog or toad
mammal An animal with a backbone and hair or fur; mothers produce milk for their babies
instinct An action that an animal can do without learning
