Chapter 2 - How Animals Grow and Change
| Term | Meaning |

| embryo | A developing animal before it is born or hatched |
| nymph | A stage in an insect life cycle between egg and adult that looks like an adult, but has no wings |
| larva | A young animal that has a different shape than the adult |
| pupa | The stage in the insect life cycle between larva and adult |
| amphibian | An animal with a backbone that lives part of its life in water and part on land |
| gills | The parts of fish and tadpoles that are used to take in oxygen from water |
| tadpole | A very young frog or toad |
| mammal | An animal with a backbone and hair or fur; mothers produce milk for their babies |
| instinct | An action that an animal can do without learning |
