Cell Transport

How do materials get into an out of the cell

QuestionAnswer
CONCENTRATION GRADIENT The difference in the concentration of a substance across a distance.
EQUILIBRIUM? The state in which the distribution of a substance is even throughout a region.
DIFFUSION The movement of any substance from a region where its concentration is higher to a region where its concentration is lower.
OSMOSIS The movement of water through a selectively permeable membrane from a more dilute solution to a more concentrated solution.
SELECTIVE PERMEABILITY Certain substances can pass through the cell membrane. Some substances cannot get through.
PHOSPHOLIPID A substance macromolecule of a phosphate group and two fatty acids.
CARRIER PROTEIN Transports specific substances across a cell membrane.
SODIUM-POTASSIUM PUMP A type of carrier protein that uses active transport to take sodium ions out of the cell and bring potassium ions into the cell.
LIPID BILAYER A double layer of phospholipids that is the foundation of a biological membrane
PASSIVE TRANSPORT The movement of materials across the cell membrane that does not require energy on the part of the cell.
ACTIVE TRANSPORT The movement of materials across the cell membrane that requires energy on the part of the cell.
VESICLE A type of organelle that transports packaged materials into or out of the cell.
ENDOCYTOSIS Moves substances into the cell using the cell membrane to create a vesicle.
EXOCYTOSIS Moves substances out of the cell by connecting a vesicle with the cell membrane and releasing the contents to the environment.
HYPERTONIC SOLUTION Water diffuses out of the cell and and the cell shrinks.
HYPOTONIC SOLUTION Water diffuses into the cell and the cell swells.
ISOTONIC SOLUTION Water diffuses equally into and out of the cell- maintaining equilibrium.
HOMEOSTASIS The cell maintains balanced using chemistry and temperature

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
