Unit 1 Biology Kloet

QuestionAnswer
Definition of Biology: The study of life (bio = life) (logy = study of)
What is biology relevant to? Medicine, environment, personal choices
What is the Scientific Method? The process that scientist use to find knowledge about the "physical" world using logical problem solving steps which can be repeated by others for further investigation .
Order of scientific method: Problem, Observation, Hypothesis, Prediction, Experiment, Theory
Problem: A question about an observation.
Observation: An experience of perception through the senses.
Hypothesis: A testable answer for an observation
Prediction: What you expect to happen when you test the hypothesis
Experiment: The test of a hypothesis that can be repeated.
Control Group: The untreated group used for comparison
Experimental Group: The group that receives treatment
Constants: Remain the same
Independent the factor that is changed (treatment) x-asis
Dependent responds to changes (measurable) y-axis
Theory: A scientific principle based on many tested hypotheses but can always change if new info is available.
Four Unifying Themes in Biology: Structure and Function, Homeostasis, Evolution, and Systems.
Structure and Function: shapes and how they work
Homeostasis: Balance with internal and external environments
Evolution: inherited change over time
Systems: Organized group of related parts that interact to form a whole
Tools used in Biology: Light Microscope, MRI, SEM, TEM
Endotherm: Organisms that are able to regulate their temp from the inside
Archaeology: Study of something old and ancient
Inference: To make an educated guess. (ex. if there were mud puddles, you would infer that it rained)
Linneaus Botanist who developed system of binomial nomenclature
Aristotle Person who came up with first system
Scientific Names Genus species (underlined)
Characteristics/ Properties of Life Cells, Energy, Response/Homeostasis, DNA-heredity
Taxonomic Order Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
Human Taxonomy Animalia, Chordata, Mammalia, Primates, Huminidae, Homo, Sapien
6 Kingdoms Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista, Archaea, Bacteria
Which Kingdoms are Multicellular Animalia, Plantae, and Fungi
Which Kingdom is unicellular Protista
Which Kingdoms are Eukaryotic Animalia, Plantae, and Protista
Which Kingdoms are Prokaryotic Archaea and Bacteria
Eukaryotic: nucleus with DNA
Prokaryotic: No nucleus
Adaptation: Inherited trait that gives advantage to individual organisms
Ecosystem: Physical environment with diff. species that interact with each other and with nonliving things
Qualitative Data Senses
Quantitative Data What you can measure
Biotechnology is based on living things and biological processes
A Transgenic organism is one that has been developed through genetic manipulation
Gene segment of DNA that stores info
Genomics The study and comparison of genomes both within and across species

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
