What is osmosis? The diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane.
What is diffusion? Particles moving from a highly concentrated area to a less concentrated area. (no energy is used)
What is active transport? The moving of particles from a less concentrated area to a highly concentrated area. (energy is used)
What is a hypo-tonic solution? When the solution is less concentrated than the cell
What is a hyper-tonic solution? When the solution is more concentrated than the cell.
What is an isotonic solution? When the solution and the cell have the same concentration.
What is a permeable membrane? A membrane that can be passed through
What happens in a hyper-tonic solution permeable to water? The cells shrink and dry up.
