QuestionAnswer
Cells smallest unit of living things
Element basic simple materials that cannot be broken down in simpler substances
Atom the smallest amount of any element
Cell theory is made up of three main ideas
compound light microscope use a series of lenses to magnify objects in steps.
electron microscope uses a beam of electrons instead of light to magnify structures up to 500 000 times their actual size, allowing scientists to see structures within a cell
eukaryote Most of the multicellular organisms we know are made up of eukaryotic cells
nucleus the central membrane- bound organelle that manages or con1trols cellular functions.
organelle observed that all cells contain small, specialized structures. Each organelle has a specific function in the cell.
prokaryote Most unicellular organisms, such as bacteria, do not have membrane- bound organelles
cell wall is a fairly rigid structure located outside the plasma membrane that provides additional support and protection.
chlorophyll traps light energy and gives leaves and stems their green color.
chloroplast are cell organelles that capture light energy and convert it to chemical energy.
chromatin strands of the genetic material, DNA
cilia are short, numerous projections that look like hairs
cytoplasm lear, gelatinous fluid inside a cell
cytoskeleton cells have a support structure within the cytoplasm
endoplasmic reticulum is the site of cellular chemical reactions
flagella longer projections that move with a whip
Golgi apparatus a flattened stack of tubular membranes that modifies the proteins.
lysosome are organelles that contain digestive enzymes.
microfilament are smaller, solid protein fibers
microtubule are thin, hollow cylinders made of protein
mitochondria are membrane
nucleolus Within the nucleus is a prominent organelle
plastid The chloroplast belongs to a group of plant organelles called plastids, which are used for storage.
ribosome the sites where the cell produces proteins according to the directions of DNA
vacuolea sac used to store food, enzymes, and other materials needed by a cell

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
