Substantive Dyes Natural dyes that have a direct affinity for fiber
Adjective Dyes Natural dyes that require a mordant to fix the color to the fiber
Mordant Usually a metal salt (tin, aluminum, iron or chromium) that allows a dye to adhere to fiber.
Tannic Acid A defensive substance found in vacuoles of some plants, used as a mordant for cellulose fibers
Step 1 Collect and prepare the plant material for dye and fabric material
Step 2 Boil dye material in a beaker for 45 minutes to extract natural dye.
Step 3 Pour dye through cheese cloth to strain out the plant material.

Step 5 Pre-wet fabrics in distilled water
Step 6 Place the beaker of dye on the hotplate, place fabric in dye, and bring to a boil. Stir often and let boil for 30-45 minutes.
Step 7 Turn off heat and let the fabric cool in the dye
