3rd grade vocabulary words for space unit

| orbit | to move in a path usually around a planet or star |
| planet | a large body in space that orbits a star |
| solar system | the Sun and the planets, moons, and other objects that orbit the Sun |
| space probe | a craft that explores outer space carrying instruments, but not people |
| Sun | the nearest star to the Earth |
| telescope | a tool that makes distant objects appear larger and sharper |
| axis | an imaginary line through the center of an object |
| constellation | a group of stars that forms a pattern shaped like an animal, person, or object |
| crater | a bowl-shaped dent caused when an object from space strikes the surface of a planet or a moon |
| full moon | the phase of the moon when all of the moon’s sunlit side faces the Earth |
| new moon | the phase of the moon when the moon is not visible from Earth because none of its sunlit side faces Earth |
