What are the 6 characteristics of life? All organisms are made of cells, use energy for metabolism, reproduce, respond to stimuli, grow and develop
What is metabolism? All of the chemical processes that build up or break down materials
When a caterpillar changes into a butterfly, is this an example of growth or development? Development
What is the definition for growth? To increase in the amount of living material.
What does it mean for an organism to develop? The organism matures & gains the ability to reproduce.
What are the 6 themes of biology discussed in class? All living things are have systems, have structures that have functions, maintain homeostasis, evolve and adapt.
What is the structure of an organism? The shape or form.
What is the function of a structure? The job that the structure performs.
What is homeostasis? The maintaining of constant internal conditions to survive in diverse environments.
Shivering to warm up or becoming thirsty or hungry are all examples of what? Homeostasis
What is the definition of evolution? The change in a species over time.
What are adaptations? Inherited traits that help an organism better survive.
