Law of Conservation of Mass The law stating that in a chemical reaction, matter is neither gained nor lost.
Physical Change A change in matter which does not alter the chemical properties of the matter.
Chemical Change A rearrangement of the atomic array of matter which results in a change of physical properties.
Element It is any substance that cannot be broken down to any other substance.
Chemical Formula a representation of a substance using symbols for its constituent elements.
Element (Diatomic) Molecule Diatomic molecules are molecules composed only of two atoms, of either the same or different chemical elements.
Compound Molecule A compound is a molecule that contains at least two different elements. All compounds are molecules but not all molecules are compounds.
Chemical Equation A symbolic representation of what happens when chemicals come in contact with one another.
Chemical Reaction Interactions in which atoms exchange or share electrons, forming new chemicals.
Reactants (of a chemical equation) Also called interact ant. any substance that undergoes a chemical change in a given reaction.
Products a substance obtained from another substance through chemical change.
Coefficient The number of molecules of reactants or products.
Subscript Refers to the small line of text in chemical formulas such as the 2 in H2O
