TermDefinition
Cell Wall A rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane and provides support to the cell.
Cell Membrane A proctective barrier that encloses the cell and seperates the cell's contents from it's environment.
Lipids Organic compounds that do not dissolve in water which include fats and cholesterol.
Phospholipid A fat that contains a phosphorus.
Hydrophobic A molecule that fears water.
Hydrophillic A molecule that loves water.
Cytoskeleton A web of proteins in the cytoplasm that gives structure to the cell and helps move some cells move.
Nucleus A large organelle in a eukaryotic cell that contains DNA.
Nucleolus A dark area within the nucleus where ribosomes are made.
Ribosomes Cell organelle composed of RNA and protein; the site of protein sythesis.
Amino acid An organic molecule that is used to make proteins.
Endoplasmic Reticulum A system of membranes that is found in a cell's cytoplasm and that assists in the production, processing, and transport of proteins and in the production of lipids.
Rough ER Endoplasmic reticulum found near the nucleus and is covered with ribosomes.
Smooth ER Endoplasmic reticulum that lack ribosomes and help make lipids and break down materials.
Mitochondrion In eukaryotic cells, the cell organelle that is surrounded by two membranes and that is the site of cellular respiration.
adenosine triphosphate ATP
Chloroplasts Organelles in plant and algae cells in which photosynthesis occurs.
Photosythesis The process by which plants and algae use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to make sugar and oxygen.
Chlorophyll A green pigment found in chloroplasts.
Golgi Complex Cell organelles that help make and package materials to be transported out of the cell.
Vesicles Small sac-like compartments that surround materials to be moved into or out of the cell.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
