Katabatic Wind (gravity driven)- comes from Mountain interior and flows out to the coastal areas in the West
Large hole in Ozone layer- problems? since 1998, ozone layer has been depleating itself tremendously due to chemicals we've pumped into the atmosphere- not good b/c allows ultraviolet rays to come in and destroy plants and animals
How are icebergs formed? formed by the breaking of the Ross Ice Shelf
Why whales abundant? because a lot of nutrients in the the waters available
Main food for creatures big and small? Krill- invertebrate that occurs in the icy water- very abundant
Emporer Penguin largest penguin in the world, 40-50 inches tall, 66-83 lbs, 350,000 on continent, Ablic life
What is an ablic life that penguin's experience? Breed during the dark winter
Roles of female and male penguins? Female lays egg in May- male incubates the egg for 9 weeks while the female goes to sea (many miles) for food, Male does not eat- huddles with other males for warmth- loses 1/3 of bw, female returns before egg hatches
Wandering Albatross sea bird, wingspan of 11ft, glide across sea and travel 550 miles a day, weight 15-25lbs.
