Arctic Tundra Biome

Ecology Exam 3

QuestionAnswer
Permafrost below the soil, permanently frozen layer of ice. Active layer (above perma) only way animals can survive b/c melts during the summer
Why don't trees grow in the Tundra? because of the permafrost- trees can't get established because no root space since frozen- impenetrable
Dominant Plants in Tundra? Sedges (grasslike plants), Grasses, and Lichens (crustlike organism that are both fungus and algae)
What kind of Trees are seen in the Tundra? Gallery Forest- trees that grow along streams (not much permafrost)- act. small (pine trees) b/c Arctic Tundra very severe winters (high wind, ice blasting)
Why receive 2 months of darkness and light? Depending on the season- due to earth's tilt on axis- angle sun hits earth is so slight doesn't warm up tundra. People that live here have sleeping problems- use special lamps
Number of Plant species? 1700 species- roots have to be fairly shallow b/c of permafrost. Dominant by Lichens, mosses, shrubs, and grasses
Tundra means? Treeless
Adaptation of Dryas flowers to attract insects like a parabolic oven, orient towards sun- capture rays- builds up heat- uses that heat to attract insects which land on it to get warm- pick up pollen
Arctic Animal Adaptations Migration, Hibernation, Bergman, Allen's rules, Cryptic coloration, Insulation, Artery/vein positioning
Bergman's Rule as go from equator (warm/moist) to Arctic- the species w/i the environmental gradient gets larger (approach sphere shape- good to preserve heat- least surface area exposed) as go to Arctic Tundra
Allen's Rule as go from Tropic to Arctic- become shorter appendages (ears, nose, legs)- gives less exposure to cold environment- large body, short legs, noses, ears
Counter Current Adaptation positioning of arteries and veins- process of warming blood between vein and artery- prevents body from becoming too cold.
Adaptation of Musk Ox uses insulation to beat the cold, grows layers of fur, one short, one long. The short layer of fur traps air then warms it with body heat- warm trapped air= insultation of the Ox. Has thick hooves- break ice, and drink water found underneath the ice
Adaptation of Arctic Hare Hares are white, which camou them from predators. Have powerful legs and strong claws to help them get food. Use strong legs to thump the ice and break open. Huddle together 100-300 mem in the winter to stay warm.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
