QuestionAnswer
matter anything that occupies space and has a mass (object's weight)
element substance that cant be broken down to other substances by ordinary chemical nature
trace elements an element that is essential for life but required in extremely minute amounts
compound substance consisting of 2 or more different elements combined in a mixed ratio
atom smallest unit of matter that still retains the properties of an element
proton a subatomic particle with a single + electric charge
electron a subatomic particle with a single - electric charge
neutron electrically neutral (no charge)
nucleus atoms central core
atomic number the # of protons of a particular element
mass number sum of protons and neutrons in an atoms nucleus
atomic mass the approx. total mass of an atom also called atomic weight ( protons + neutrons)
isotopes variant form of atom, have the same # of protons but different #'s of neutrons
stable isotope nuclei doesnt lose particles
radioactive isotope nucleus decays spontaneously giving off particles and energy
electron shell an energy level representing the distance of an electron from the nucleus of an atom
chemical bonds an attraction between 2 atoms resulting from a sharing of outer shell electrons or the presence of opposite charges on the atoms. the bonded atoms gain complete outer electron shells
ion an atom that has gained or lost one or more electrons thus acquiring a charge
ionic bond a chemical bond resulting from the attraction between oppositely charged ions
salt a compound resulting from the formation of ionic bonds; also called an ionic compound
covalent bond an attraction between atoms that share 1 or more of outer shell electrons; symbolized by a single line between the atoms
molecule a group of 2 or more atoms held together by covalent bonds
double bond a type of covalent bond which 2 atoms share 2 pairs of electrons; symbolized by a pair of lines between the 2 bonded atoms

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
