What are the 2 types of microscopes? Simple microscope and the Compound microscope
What are the characteristics of a simple microscope? Contains only 1 lens. used as early as the 10th century.
What are the characteristics of a Compound Microscope? Contains 2 lenses, one ocular and one objective. provides much greater magnification than the simple microscope.
Define Magnification. the ratio of the image size to the specimen size. (how big the image is in proportion o how big the item is)
Define Resolution/Resolving Power. The clarity of an image; the ability of the microscope to show2 points that are colse together as separate points.
How do you calculate the Total Magnification? Ocular lens x the objective lens/
Course Adjustment used to focus under any power
Fine Adjustment used on LOW power only.
Base supports the microscope
Mirror illuminates the stage
arm supports the body;used for carrying
eyepeice (ocular) to look through
body tube connects the ocular to the nose piece
nose piece holds objective lens (rotates)
high power objective higher magnification
low power objective lower magnification
clip holds the slide
diaphragm controls the amount of light
stereo microscope dissecting microscope, 2 eyepieces, objective lens provides a 3-d image;image is not reversed
electron microscope uses beams of electrons;250,000x mag.;only non-living specimens.
ultra centrifuge separates the diff. parts of the cells by thier densities
microdissectio instruments small instruments used under the microscope for the removal, addition or transfer of cells parts.
staining used to make organelles more visible
tissue culture tissue culture a tequnique for maintaining living tissue in a culture medium outside teh body
