BIOL301 Exam I
Fossil Record Terms Exam I
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Fossils | Remains of any ancient organism |
| Paleontology | The study of life of the past |
| Fauna | Critters |
| Flora | Plants |
| What is the use of Paleontology? | Traditionally, dating of rocks. Others might say the aesthetic value of collecting fossils |
| Biostratigraphy | Use of fossils to date rocks |
| Who was George Cuvier? | Father of comparative anatomy, brilliant anatomist, was able to describe and compare extinct and living animals. Showed that many fossils belonged to groups which could no longer exist. |
| Modern Synthesis | Combination of Darwinian evolution with genetics and ecology |
| Macroevolution | Evolutionary processes acting above the level of species |
| Stratigraphy | The study of layers of rock |
| Lithostratigraphy | Based purely on characteristics of rock. Basic unit is a formation. |
| Formation | Unit of rock which has a distinct description and can be mapped. |
| Member | A subdivision of a formation |
| Group | Multiple formations grouped together usually due to related geologic conditions of formation |
| Supergroup | Multiple groups, grouped together because of related tectonic conditions |
| Angular Unconformities | Gaps in the rock where erosion occurred rather than deposition. Two layers of rock meet that are inclined at different angles to one another |
| Disconformity | gap between two sedimentary layers that are parallel, erosion, but no tilting |
| Nonconformity | Where sedimentary or volcanic rocks lie directly or metamorphic rocks (i.e. sandstone on granite) |
| Chronostratigraphy | Based upon absolute dates, completely independent of rock type. Determined by radioactive decay of unstable isotopes |
| Magnetostratigraphy | Matching the polarity differences can correlate rocks around the world |
| Chemostratigraphy | Study of stable isotope trends through time (most powerful tool used in paleo studies), used in study of paleoclimates |
