Tissues and enzymes

key words for GCSE topic on tissues, organs and enzymes. Suitable for EAL.

QuestionAnswer
tissue (n) a group of cells with similar structure and function
cell (n) the smallest basic unit of a plant or animal
epithelial tissue (n) tissue that covers the outside of the body and the internal organs
muscular tissue (n) tissue that contracts to move something
organ (n) structure made up of more than one tissue type. It has a specific role in the body
glandular tissue (n) (gland) tissue that can secrete enzymes and hormones
lipid (n) a substance such as a fat, oil or wax that dissolves in alcohol but not in water and is an important part of living cells
enzyme (n) chemical substances which are produced by living cells and which cause particular chemical reactions to happen while not being changed themselves
catalyst (n) something that makes a chemical reaction happen more quickly without itself being changed
substrate (n) a substance which an enzyme (= chemical made by living cells) acts on to produce a chemical reaction
denatured (adj) when an enzyme is broken up and the active sites shape is changed so it can no longer function.
