Science? a body of knowledge about the natural world and an evidence-based process for aquiring that knowledge
Observation? a description, measurement, or record of any object or phenomenon
Can an observation be reproducible? It must be!
Scientific hypothesis/educated guess? an informed, logical, and plausible explanation for observations of the natural world
Variables? charachteristics of any object or individual organism that can change
Data? descricptions such as what is found in nature: where, when, and how much
Statistics? a mathmatical science that uses probability theory to estimate the reliability of data
Correlation? two or more aspects of the natural world behave in an interrelated manner
Experiment? a reaptable manipulation of one or more aspects of the natural world
independent variable? what can be manipulated by us
dependent variable? any response that could potentially happen because of the independent varible
controlled experiment? researcher measures the value of the dependent variable for two groups of study subjects that are comparable in all respects except that one group is exposed to the systematic change in the independent variable and the other group is not
control group? is maintained under a standard set of conditions with no change in the independent variable
experimental or treatment group? maintained under same standard of conditions as the control group but is manipulated in a way that changes the independent variable
scientific fact? direct and repeatable observation of any respect of the natural world
What is required for living organisms? Composed of one or more cells, repro, use/obtain energy, respond to environment, homeostasis, can evolve
cell? smallest unit of life
plasma membrane? water-repelling layer on outside of cells
gene? segment of dna tht codes for a distinct genetic charachteristic
chromosome? threadlike structure composed of a single dna molecule packaged with proteins
metabolism? the capture, storage, and use of energy by living organisms
photosynthesis? plants using the energy of sunlight as chemical energy to manufacture food
autotrophs/producers? make their own food
heterotrophs/consumers? aquire food from producers or other comsumers
homeostasis? the maintaining of a constant internal condition
artificial selection? when humans are responsible for a generation change in the characteristics of a group of organisims
evolution? a change in organisms over time
species? organisms that interbreed in their natural surroundings but not with other organisms
population? group of organisms within a species that shares a common habitat
natural selection? a change in the population of a species over time due to the survival of the better suited individuals
