Human Biology Test 1

QuestionAnswer
Three types of membrane junction Tight junction, adhesion, gap junction
Tight junction Prevents fluids and most molecules from moving between cells. Useful in lungs.
Adhesion Anchors cells together, but still allows for movement and flexibility
Gap Junctions Transmembrane proteins form pores that allow small molecules to pass from cell to cell
4 types of tissue types Connective, Nervous, Muscle, Epithelial
Connective Tissues Most abundant and widely distributed tissue type.
Four classes of connective tissue Connective tissue proper, cartilage, bone tissue, blood.
Major Functions of Connective Tissues Binding and support, Protetion, Insulation, Transportation
Connective Tissue Proper Loose connective tissue and Dense connective tissue
Loose Connective Tissue supports and protects organs
Dense Connective Tissue (Dense Regular) Attaches muscles to bones or to muscles. Attatches bones to bones. (Tendons)
Dense Connective Tissue (Dense Irregular) Able to withstand tension exerted in many directions, structural strength. (Dermis of the skin)
Dense Connective Tissue (Elastic) Allows recoil of tissue following stretching (walls of large arteries)
Cartilage Hyaline, Elastic, Fibro
Hyaline Cartilage Supports and reinforces. Resists compressive stress. (Trachea and larynex)
Elastic Cartilage Maintains the shape of a structure while allowing great flexibility. (External Ear)
Fibrocartilage Tensile strength with the ability to absorb compressive shock. (discs of knee joints)
Connective Tissue: Bone Spongy (Soft middle shaft and end of bone). Compact (Hard outer shell of bone)
Blood Transport of respiratory gases, nutrients, wastes, and other substances. Contained withing blood vessels
Nervous Tissue Transmit electrical signals from sensory receptors and to effectors which control their activity. (Brain, Spinal Cord, and Nerves)
Muscle Tissue Skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, smooth muscle
Skeletal Muscle Voluntary muscle, locomotion, facial expression. (skeletal muscles attached to bones or occasionaly to skin)
Smooth Muscle Involuntary control, propels substances or objects along internal passageways (walls of hollow organs)
Cardiac Muscle Involuntary control, As is contracts it propels blood into circulation (walls of the heart)
Epithelial Membranes Cutaneous Membrane, Mucous Membranes
Organs Organs are made when multiple layers of various tissues come together, communicate with one another and live side by side

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
