Human Biology Test One Study Material

QuestionAnswer
What are the three main regions of the cell? 1. Nucleus 2. Cytoplasm 3. Plasma Membrane
Nucleus Control center of the cell
Plasma Membrane Barrier for cell contents Contains proteins, cholesterol and glycoproteins
Microvilli Finger like projections that increase surface area for absorbtion. Stick off the plasma membrane and allow for communication between the cell and the ECF
Cytoplasm Material outside Nucleus and inside plasma membrane. Locomotion of cell vesicles, proteins and all other molecules that move in the cell.
Mitochondria Provides ATP for cellular energy Powerhouses of the cell
Ribosomes Made of protein and RNA Found in Rough ER and free in cytoplasm Machinery to create protein from MRNA
Rough ER Studded with ribosomes Finalizes proteins
Smooth ER Functions in lipid metabolism and detoxification of drugs and pesticides (No Ribosomes)
Golgi Apparatus Modifies and packages proteins -secretory vesicles -cell membrane components -lysosomes
Lysosomes Contain enzymes that digest worn out or nonusable materials within the cell denature non functional or miss folded proteins
Cytoskeleton support and struture of cell, limited cell movement
Fibroblasts grab onto tissue (connect body parts)
Erythrocytes Carry Oxygen (connects body parts)
Epithelial cells Surface cells, waterproof skin cells, cells that cover and line body organs
Skeletal muscle cell/smooth muscle cell cells that move organs and body parts (full of mitochondria for energy)
Fat Cell cell that stores nutrients (only cell that can get bigger or smaller)
Macrophage cell that fights disease (patrols and removes bacteria)
Nerve Cell Cell that gathers information and contols body functions (to move electrical currents)
Sperm Cell of reproduction (only cell that is flagellated)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
