What is an atom with a complete valence shell? Unreactive or inert.
Element A substance that cannot be split up by a chemical reaction.
Atom Smallest possible unit that still is made up of its physical and chemical properties.
Three most stable subatomic particles? Neutrons, Protons, and electrons.
Atomic Number The number of protons found in an atom.
Isotope Atoms of an element that have the same atomic number but a different atomic mass.
Electrons Negatively charged protons that orbit the nucleus.
Chemical Bonds Hold together molecules.
Molecules Atoms that are combined with chemical bonds.
Compounds Molecules made from more than one atom.
Structural Formula The formula which represents atoms and the bonding molecules.
Covalent Bonds Chemical bonds between atoms. Strongest chemical bond.
Electronegativity Atoms ability to attract and hold electrons.
Nonpolar covalent bond Bond formed from an equal amount of electrons.
Polar covalent bond Bond formed from an unequal amount of electrons.
Ion Charged molecule or atom.
Ionic Bond Bond formed by the electrostatic attraction after the complete transfer of an electron from a donor atom to an acceptor.
