Chemistry vocabulary

WordDefinition
Element A substance that can't be broken down into simpler substances.
Neutron Neutral, is in the nucleus of an atom.
Proton Positively charged, also in the nucleus of an atom.
Electron Negatively charged, orbits the nucleus.
Atomic Number Number of protons in a certain atom. Atoms of the same element have the same atomic number.
Atomic Mass The approximate mass of an entire atom.
Isotopes Atoms of the same atomic number and element with different masses.
Chemical Bonds The attraction of outer shell electrons from one atom to another that bind the molecule.
Molecule Made out of chemically bonded atoms.
Compound Molecules made of more than one type of atom.
Structural Formula Formula that represents the atoms and bonding within a molecule.
Molecular/Chemical Formula Formula that indicates the number and type of atoms.
Covalent Bond Chemical bond formed between atoms by sharing electrons.
Electronegativity Atom's ability to attract and control electrons.
Nonpolar Covalent Bond Covalent bond formed by equal sharing of electrons.
Polar Covalent Bond Covalent bond formed from unequal sharing of electrons.
Ion Charged atom of molecule.
Ionic Bond Bond formed by the electrostatic attraction of an electron.
Buffers Minimizes wide fluctuations of pH to make sure organisms have a healthy body pH that is necessary for life.
Hydrolysis Water is added to a macromolecule, breaking it apart.
De-Hydration Synthesis Water is taken away, creating a bond between two molecules.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
