What do capillaries do and what are they composed of? | -Associated with gas, fluid, metabolite, and nutrient exchange -Composed of endothelial cells, basement membrane, and occasional pericytes |
Continuous Capillaries | -no interruption of lining -found in fat, muscle, and nervous system |
Fenestrated capillaries | -contain pores with diaphragm for high capacity exchange -found in small intestine, kidney, and endocrine glands |
Discontinuous capillaries | -large gaps between endothelial cells -found in sinusoids of liver, bone marrow, and spleen |
Pericyte | -contractile cells that wrap around the endothelial cells of capillaries and venules throughout the body. -embedded in basement membrane where they communicate with endothelial cells of the body's smallest blood vessels |
How do postcapillary venules differ from capillaries? | -Greater diameter and more pericytes than capillaries -Where white blood cells enter and leave vascular system |
arteriovenous shunt | -direct connection between arteriole and venule |
Important functions of epithelium | -Permeability barrier between the blood and tissues -Make collagen/proteoglycans for basement membrane maintenance -Control blood flow by regulating the diameter -Non-adhesive surface -Adhesion molecules, Interleukins, and Growth Factors |
What is significant of a Vein with a valve? What is it? | a projection of the tunica intima of the vein wall in veins larger than 2mm, and is composed of fibroelastic tissue. |
What kind of drainage do lymphatic vessels do? | Passive |
