Question | Answer |
---|---|
Buildings are classified into how many major construction types and based on what | There are 5 types (I, II, III, IV and V) based on the fire resistance of certain building elements. See CBC Table 601 for the fire rating (between 1 and 3 hours). |
Which building type is the most fire resistant | Type I. |
Which building type(s) are considered non-combustible | Types I and II (only non-conbustible materials can be used, with some exceptions). |
Some building types contain A and B subgroups. What does this signify | This indicates differences in fire-resistive requirements of the 2 subgroups. |
What construction type is for most R-3 occupancies (residential homes) | Type V-A or V-B. Little to no fire resistance. |
In combination with occupancy group, a building's type limits what two things | Area and height. See CBC Table 503. |
Name examples of building elements that may be required to be fire resistance rate | Structural framing, bearing walls, non-bearing walls and partitions, floor and roof construction. |
Exceptions to the allowable height and building areas can be made by either of what two conditions | Automatic sprinkler system installation and/or if >25% of building's perimeter is on a street frontage. |
On what three factors are fire-resistance requirements based for exterior, nonbearing walls | 1. Distance from building to property line 2. Type of construction 3. Occupancy group |
What are the 2 purposes of designing buildings to certain classifications | 1. Protect the structural elements from fire and collapse 2. Prevent fire from spreading from one building to another |
Which has more limitations on area and height - Type 1 or Type V | Type V since it is more combustible. |
What are the factors that determine the fire hazard for a fire zone | 1. Density 2. Access for firefighting equipment 3. Existing building heights |
If a building is equipped throughout with an approved automatic sprinkler system, how much can the maximum height be increased | 20 feet |
If a building is equipped throughout with an approved automatic sprinkler system, how many stories can be added to the building | One. |
What is a noncombustible material | 1 .No part will ignite and burn when subjected to fire or any material passing the ASTM E136 test, or 2. A material having a structural base of noncombustible material with a surfacing material not over 1/8 in. thick and flame-spread rating of 50 or less. |
Type 2 construction is | structural frame must be steel, iron concrete or masonry. |
Type 3 construction is | exterior walls are of non-combustible materials and the other walls can be of any material. Fire retardant treated wood framing shall be permitted within exterior wall assemblies of 2 houors rating or less. |
602.4 Type IV construction | (Heavy Timber, HT) is that type of construction in which the exterior walls are of noncombustible materials and the interior building elements are of solid or laminated wood without concealed spaces. |
602.5 Type V. is? | type of construction in which the structural elements, exterior walls and interior walls are of any materials permitted by this code. |
SECTION 703 | FIRE-RESISTANCE RATINGS AND FIRE TESTS Materials prescribed herein for fire resistance shall conform to the requirements of this chapter. |
noncombustible materials, except as permitted in Section 603 and elsewhere in this code. | 602.2 Types I and II. |
What does a building type limit during construction | The building type limits the types of materials that can be used. |
Is A or B more restrictive | A is more restrictive. |
