Tissues

TissueAbout Tissue
Epithelial Tissue Covers and lines the body Location: Outer layer of skin, lining of intestines, lining on respitory tract.
Simple Squamous Allows diffusion, not protection. Location: lining of kidney, gas exchange in lungs.
Simple Cuboidal Secretion and Absorption Location: kidney tubules, ducts of small glands.
Simple Columnar Secretion, absorption, some protection, movement of mucous Location – nonciliated: lining of digestive tract, Ciliated: uterine tubes, bronchi
Psuedostratified columnar Secretion, movement of mucous and sex cells, some protection Location :respiratory passages (trachea) and reproductive system tubes
Stratified squamous Protection of underlying tissue Location keratinized: skin - nonkeratinized: moist linings of mouth, esophagus, and vagina
Stratified Cuboidal Secretion Location: ducts of large glands such as sweat glands and mammary glands
Stratified Columnar Acts as transitional tissue between two types of tissues Location: lining of some ducts, parts of urethra
Transitional epithelial Allows bladder and urinary tract to stretch when filled with urine Location: urinary tract: ureter, bladder, urethra
Connective Tissue Binding and support, protection, insulation, transportation Location: In between other tissues
Areolar Binds organs together Location: beneath epithelial tissue; between muscles
Adipose Protection, insulation, fat storage Location: beneath skin, around organs
Reticular Immune system; produce and store white blood cells Location: lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, bone marrow
Dense Binds organs together Loaction: tendons, ligaments
Hyline Cartalige Support, provides surface for bones to move over Location: nose, ends of long bones, fetal skeleton
Bone Support, protection, helps in movement Location: Body
Blood Transportation of nutrients, oxygen, and carbon dioxide; fights infection
Fibrocartalige Flexable Location: Ear
Elastic Cartalige Absorbs shock, reduces friction Location: meniscus in knee, cartilage between vertebrae
Musclear Tissue Movement
Skeletal Muscle Voluntary movement Location: attached to long bones
Smooth Muscle Push object(s) through internal passage (digested food, urine, baby) constriction of blood vessels, pupils, etc… Involuntary control Location: walls of hollow organs such as digestive tract, etc…
Cardiac Muscle Contraction of heart, involuntary control Location: Heart
Nervous Tissue Conducts nerve impulses Location: brain, spinal cord, nerves
Microvilli Absorption, occurs more often and quicker Structure: Tiny finger like projections that increase the cells surface area
Tight Junctions prevents substances from passing through to other tissies, keeps chemicals in cells Structure: Leak proof sheet that bind cells together (zipper)
Gap Juntions allow communicaion= rapid exchange, cells exchange stuff Structure: hollow cylinders between cells that span the entire width of the membrane
Desmosomes prevents cells subjected to mechanical stress, from being pulled apart. Structure: anchoring juntions, button like with protein (thread) that binds cells together.
Matrix Ground substance of matrix is composed largely of water, adhesion protiens and large pdysacchande Connective have most matrix
