Civil War Words

Definitions

TermDefinition
Civil War The war that was fought in the United States pitting the southern states against the northern states.
Reconstruction The time period after the Civil War.
Antebellum The time period before the Civil War.
Freedmen’s Bureau A governmental agency aimed at helping the newly freed slaves.
Secessionist A person who wants to secede (in SC) with or without other states.
Unionist A person (in SC) who wants to stay together with the Union (United States of America).
Cooperationist A person (in SC) who wanted to leave the Union only if other states agreed to leave.
Abraham Lincoln The president of the United States during the Civil War. He was the president when slavery was abolished.
Robert E. Lee The general of the Confederate army during the Civil War.
Ulysses S. Grant The general of the Union army during the Civil War.
