Diabetic Foot Care

What is diabetes? | A chronic disease in which the body either cannot produce insulin or cannot properly use the insulin it produces |
What is Type 1? | A disease in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin |
What is Type 2? | A disease in which your pancreas does produce enough insulin, or your body does not properly use the insulin it makes. |
Problems found in the feet? | Skin colour changes, elevation in skin temperature, swelling of the foot and ankle, pain in the leg, bleeding corns and callouses, open sores on feet that are slow healing, ingrown and fungal toenails, dry cracks in the skin; especially around the heel. |
Advice for diabetics? | If there are warning signs, let the family doctor or podiatrist know. They know how to treat and prevent these wounds and be an important factor in keeping the feet healthy and strong. |
Pedicure treatment modifications? | No credo wand, no nippers, work gently, and watch heat (careful) |
