Sociology- Beliefs in Society- Unit 3

QuestionAnswer
Fundamentalism Belief in the need to subscribe or return to traditional values and practices, usually involving the literal translation of a text
Secularism Religious skepticism, or religious beliefs and practices losing their significance in society
Charismatic Exercising or compelling charm that inspires the devotion of others
Shia A division of Islam, carried out mainly in Iran that believes in the Prophet Ali as the true successor of Muhammad.
Sunni One of the two main branches of Islam that accepts the first four caliphs as successors of Muhammad, rather than Ali as the Shia believes.
Islam A monotheistic religion that originated with the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. The revelatory scripture is known as the Qur'an
Pentecostal A form of Christianity that emphasizes the work of the Holy Spirit and the direct presence of God.
NRM New Religious Movement that is a religious community or ethical, spiritual or philosophical group of modern origins which has a peripheral place within it's nations dominant religious culture
Catholic A member or follower of the Roman Catholic Church, with broad or wide ranging tastes
