Question | Answer |
0-9 months | learn to become upright, walking w/support, wide BOS, genu varum |
9-18 months | center of mass is closer to head & trunk, balance is dependent on the head, independent walking.Wide BOS full foot contact, more steps/minute |
18-24 months | increased strength, legs are straight no genu varum, independ.walk; decreased BOS, arms low, heel-toe, ant/post movement |
3-5 years | genu valgus is normal, center of mass at lower thoracic, heel strike, balance refined, arm swing |
Mature Stage | reflexive arm swing, narrow BOS, relaxed gait, minimal vertical lift, heel-toe contact |
Development of Gait | children will stand & walk 9-15 months |
Mature gait pattern develops by | 3.5-5 years |
Walking is initially controlled by | central pattern generator (CPG) |
Central Pattern Generators | (you need to survive) set of muscle commands which are structured before a movement begins & which is sent to the muscle w/the correct timing so that the entire sequence is carried out in the absence of peripheral feedback. |
spinal processes capable of producing | rhythmic control of one limb, w/or w/o sensory input & descending control, adaptable & plastic |
CPG's | initially automatic, can learn to control & become voluntary (breathing, chewing, swallowing, stepping)-need to survive |
Predictors of Walking | independent sitting by 2 years old, weight bear on hands while in prone by 18 months, level 1,2,3 on GMFCS by 2 years old will walk |
Teaching Gait | Stimulate CPG/s, terminal knee & hip extension, repetition, control ankle medial/lateral, move the feet |
When to start gait | 7-12 months |
Level I | walks without limitations |
Level II | walks with limitations |
Level III | walks using a hand-held mobility device |
Level IV | self-mobility w/limitations; may use powered mobility |
Level V | transported in a manual wheelchair |
