Question | Answer |
bacteria (bacterium sing) | A microscopic, unicellular, prokaryotic organism in kingdom Eubacteria or Archaebacteria. |
kingdom Archaebacteria | Microscopic organisms that are prokaryotic, live in extreme environments, and lack some compounds found in the cell walls of eubacteria. |
kingdom Eubacteria | Microscopic organisms that are also prokaryotic. Many are disease-causing, and are responsible for decomposing most organic matter. This is the kingdom that people think of when they hear the term bacteria. |
binary fission | A method of asexual reproduction seen in bacteria in which the genetic material is replicated and the cell splits in two. |
virus | A nonliving structure, made of a strand of DNA or RNA and surrounded by a protein coat, that replicates itself inside host cells |
kingdom Protista | Very diverse kingdom with species that can move, obtain food, and reproduce. They are all eukaryotic. Most are unicellular, but some form colonies and a few are multicellular. Contains 2 general types of organisms - protozoans and algae. |
protozoan | An animal-like organism in the kingdom Protista that usually can move and does not perform photosynthesis |
conjugation | A type of sexual reproduction in many unicellular and colonial organisms for the purpose of exchanging portions of their genetic material |
algae | The plantlike organisms in kingdom Protista that can perform photosynthesis and are usually unable to move themselves. |
fragmentation | A type of asexual reproduction cause by a physical disturbance that breaks a colonial organism; observed in algae. |
plankton | Microscopic organisms, primarily protozoans and algae, that float near the ocean's surface and are a key food source in the ocean's food chain. |
kingdom Fungi | Kingdom which includes yeast, molds, smuts, mushrooms, and toadstools. They all have spores and most fungal cells are long filaments called hyphae. |
hyphae (sing. hypha) | The slender filaments of a fungus that secrete enzymes for use in external digestion. |
lichen | A fungus and an algae that live together symbiotically for mutual benefit and appear as a single organism. |
symbiotic | A close, long-term relationship between two species. |
