What are the properties of a solid? | Solids can't be squashed, they cant take up a new volume, they can't flow, they stay in one place. |
What are the properties of a liquid? | Liquids can flow, they can't take up a new volume, they can't be squashed. |
What are the properties of a gas? | Gasses can take up new volume, it can be squashed, gasses can sometimes be poured. |
Explain the particles of a solid. | Solid particles are very close together. They can only vibrate, but on a fixed point. This is why solids keep their shapes. |
Explain the particles of a liquid. | Liquid particles are a bit further apart from each other. The particles can move around, but still stuck together. This is why liquids can flow or be poured. |
Explain the particles of a gas. | Gas particles are far away from each other. They can bump into each other or other surfaces. This is why gasses can take up a new volume (big or small), if the volume of the container decreased, the particles will be forced closer. |
Explain how smell spreads. | Smell spreads because the particles that carries the smell wants to go to a place from a high concentration to a place with low concentration. So when the particles move, they smell comes with them. This process is called diffusion. |
What causes pressure? | Pressure is caused by particles that move around, hitting each other or the sides of the container. The more particles hit the side, the more pressure created. |
Why can't we feel the air pressure around us? | We cant feel the air pressure around us because we are used to it. |
What will happen to a balloon if the pressure gets too high; explain how and why. | If the pressure gets too high, the balloon will eventually burst. This happens when we blow into the balloon, putting more air particles in it. This makes the rubber stretch. When the rubber reaches its stretching limit, it will burst. |
Explain what happens when you suck a staw. | When you suck a straw, you make the pressure in your mouth lower than the pressure outside. Air pressure from outside pushes on the liquid and container. This pressure is greater than the pressure inside your mouth, causing it to push the drink up straw. |
What is a vacuum? | A vacuum is a space where there are no particles in it. |
Explain why a vacuum makes a balloon inflate without us have to blow it. | In a vacuum, there are no particles, that means no force pushing against the balloon outside. So therefore, when we put a tied and an inflated balloon it will expand by itself. |
Explain what the particles are like in cold air. | The particles in cold air are close together. |
Explain what the particles are like in warm air. | The particles in warm air gets pushed out and spread far from each other. |
