kingdom | In the modern classification system, the largest group of living organisms. |
phylum | In the modern classification system, a subdivision of a kingdom; includes one or more classes of organisms. |
class | In the modern classification system, a subdivision of a phylum; includes one or more orders of organisms. |
order | A subdivision of a class; includes one or more families of organisms. |
family | A subdivision of an order; includes one or more genera of organisms. |
genus | In the modern classification system, a subdivision of a family; includes one or more species of organisms. |
species | A group of similar organisms that interbreed and produce offspring capable of reproducing. |
scientific name | The unique two-word name of a particular organism. Also called genus-species name. Genus name is capitalized, and the entire name is written in Latin and italics. |
biblical kind | The grouping of organisms, established by God, that are able to breed among themselves and produce offspring. |
cell | The tiny, living, structural, and functional unit of all living things; the smallest unit that can be alive. |
unicellular | A living thing composed entirely of one cell. |
multicellular | A living thing that is composed of more than one cell and whose individual cells are not normally able to live singly apart from the organism. |
energy | The ability to do work. |
cell theory | The theory that all living things are made up of microscopic units called cells and that cells carry on the functions of living things. |
molecule | The smallest unit existing as a particular substance. |
carbohydrate | A substance that contains only carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, e.g. sugar or starch. |
lipid | A substance such as fat or oil; not soluble in water; an important component of membranes. |
protein | A substance made of long chains of amino acids; may serve as an enzyme or as a cellular building block; found in certain foods. |
nucleic acid | A molecule that contains the genetic information of a cell; DNA and RNA are the main types. |
