Literary Element | Meaning |
protagonist | the main character, or the one most central to the action of the story |
antagonist | the person, thing, or force that works against the protagonist, or main character, of a work |
author's purpose | reason for creating a work |
style | the way the author uses words, phrases, and sentences to express his ideas |
mood | the feeling that a literary work gives to readers |
plot | the action or sequence of events in a story-exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution |
conflict | the problem that triggers the action |
point of view | vantage point from which a story is told--first-person or third-person |
setting | time and place in which the action of a literary work occurs |
theme | the statement about life that the author wants to convey to the reader |
character | a person, animal, or imaginary creature that takes part in the action of a story |
static character | stays the same throughout the story |
dynamic character | changes from the beginning to the end of a story |
characterization | techniques an author uses to develop the personallity of a character in a literary work-appearance, personality, speech, behavior, thoughts, feelings, and interactions with other characters |
dialogue | words spoken by characters in a literary work |
dialect | a form or language that is spoken in a particular place or by a particular group of people |
genre | category of type of literature |
symbol | a person, place, thing, or event used to represent somethng else |
first-person point of view | told by a one of the characters |
third-person point of view | told by a narrator who stands outside the story and observes the events as they unfold |
