Question | Answer |
Stimulus | any change or signal in the enviroment that makes the organism react |
Response | what your body does in reaction to a stimulus |
Neuron | cells that carry info through the nervous system |
Nerve impulse | a message that a neuron carries |
Dendrite | carries impusle toward cell body |
Axon | carries impulse away from cell body |
Nerve | a bundle of nerve fibers |
Sensory Neuron | picks up stimuli from internal/external environment and converts each stimulus into a nerve impulse |
Interneuron | a neuron that carries nerve impulses from from neuron to another |
Motor Neuron | Sends an impulse to a muscle and the muscle contracks in response |
Synaspe | a tiny space between each axon and the next structure |
Centeral Nervous System | constists of brain and spinal cord |
Peripheral Nervous System | consists of all nerves located out side the nervous system |
Brain | located in the skull, part of the centeral nervous system that controls most functions in the body |
Spinal Cord | a thick column of nerve tissue that links the brain to most of the nerves in the peripheral nervous system |
Cerebrum | interprets inout from the senses, controls the movement of the skeletel muscles, carries out complex mental processes like: remembering, making good judgments |
Cerebellum | cordinates the actions of your muscles and helps you keep your balance |
Brain stem | lies between the cerebellum and the spinal cord, controls your body involuntary actions (those that occur automatically) |
Somatic Nervous System | controls voluntary actions (tying shoelaces, picking up a fork) |
Autonomatic Nervous System | controls involuntary actions (adjusting blood vessels) |
Reflex | automatic response that occurs very rapidly and without conscious control (blinking) |
Concussion | bruise-like injury to the brain |
