Question | Answer |
1. Olfactory | Openings in cribiform plate. Detect smells. Sniff alcohol wipe. |
2. Optic | In optic papilla, an extension of subarachnoid space. Sensory transmission of light and visual impulses from retina to occipital lobe. Visual acuity, light perception, and visual fields. |
3. Oculomotor | Adjacent to midbrain. Moves eyes up and down and laterally. Pupillary reaction. Ptosis, look up, down, medially. |
4. Trochlear | Moves eyes down and out. |
5. Trigeminal | 3 branches: opthalmic, maxillary, mandibular, origin adjacent to pons. Chewing, sensory for face, teeth, mouth and eyes. |
6. Abducens | Distributed to lateral rectus muscle of eyeball. Abducts eyes to ear. Most sensitive to ICP. |
7. Facial | 5 branches distributed to anterior 2/3 of tongue, facial, scalp and neck muscles, lacrimal and salivary glands. Facial expression, closes eyelids, secretion of tears, salivation. Have patient smile, raise eyebrows, close eyelids against resistance. |
8. Vestibulocochlear (acoustic) | Adjacent to CN VII, semicircular canals and cochlea of ear. Hearing, equilibrium, audiometry, and balance. Romberg and hearing. |
9. Glossopharyngeal | Posterior 1/3 of tongue, pharynx muscles, parotid gland. Salivation, swallowing, taste, speech, monitors carotid bodies and sinus. Have patient open up and say ah, check uvula rise and fall, and gag. |
10. Vagus | Adjacent to medulla. Lifts palate, swallowing, coughing, voice production, test with glossopharyngeal. Aortic pressure, slows heart rate, stimulates digestive organs, taste. |
11. Spinal Accesssory | Muscles of trapezius, sternocleidomastoid, pharynx, larynx and soft palate. Shrug shoulders against resistance, swallow. |
12. Hypoglossal | Distributed to tongue muscles. Moves tongue, speech and swallowing. |
CN I | Olfactory: Openings in cribiform plate. Detect smells. Sniff alcohol wipe. |

CN VII | Facial: 5 branches distributed to anterior 2/3 of tongue, facial, scalp and neck muscles, lacrimal and salivary glands. Facial expression, closes eyelids, secretion of tears, salivation. Have patient smile, raise eyebrows, close eyelids tight. |
CN VI | Abducens: Distributed to lateral rectus muscle of eyeball. Abducts eyes to ear. Most sensitive to ICP. |
CN V | Trigeminal: 3 branches: opthalmic, maxillary, mandibular, origin adjacent to pons. Chewing, sensory for face, teeth, mouth and eyes. |
CN IV | Trochlear: Moves eyes down and out. |
