Muscle Fibers | Another name for muscle cells. |
Myofilaments | Actin and Myosin-microfilaments. Includes both of the two. |
Skeletal Muscle Tissue | packaged into the skeletal msucles, organs that attach to and cover the bony skeleton; are longest muscle cells; are striated, and are controlled voluntarily; connect muscle to bone; referred to as muscular system. |
Cardiac Muscle | only occurs in the heart; involuntary; striated; coordinated activity to act like a pump. |
Smooth Muscle | found in walls of hollow visceral organs; no strations; involuntary; coordinated activity to act like a pump. |
Excitability | (irritability); abiliy to receive and respond to a stimulus, that is, any change in environment. |
Contractility | ability to be stretched or extended. |
Elasticity | ability of a muscle fiber to recoil and resume its resting length after being stretched. |
4 main functions of Muscle | 1. Producing Movement 2. Maintaining Posture 3. Stabilizing Joints 4. Generating Heat |
Insertion | "moveable bone" ; contracts, and moves toward the immovable or less movable bone. |
Origin | "immovable bone" ; lies proximal to the insertion. |
Sarcoplasmis Reticulum | an elaborate smooth endoplasmic reticulum, with interconnecting tubules surrounding each myofibril. Create channels called "terminal cisternae" ; place where Calcium Ions are stored. |
