Niche (nichos) | A function within an ecological system to which an organism is especially suited |
Behavioral adaptation | An animal's behavior that helps it survive in its habitat- desert animals that hide from the hot sun and are active at night |
Structural adaptation | An animal's physical traits that help it survive in its habitat - web feet on a duck |
Camouflage (Camuflaje) | When an animal's color or markings help it hide |
Mimicry | When one animal looks like another - a type of camouflage |
Species (Especie) | A group of plants or animals that are the same |
Population (Población) | All the individuals of a single species living in an ecosystem - example, all the dragons living in your neighborhood |
Community (comunidades) | All the living elements of an ecosystem |
Ecosystem (ecosistemas) | The interconnectedness of organisms (plants, animals, microbes) with each other and their environment |
Food Web (red alimentaria) | A diagram showing the organisms that eat other organisms in a particular ecosystem, predators being higher in the web than their prey |
Energy pyramid (Pirámide de la energía) | A diagram showing the energy transfer in an ecosystem - There is more energy available at the bottom, more required at the top |
Carnivore (Carnívoro) | Any animal that eats meat as the main part of its diet |
Herbivore (Herbívoro) | Any animal that eats only plants |
Scavenger (Limpiador) | Any animal that eats primarily dead stuff |
Decomposer | Any organism that feeds off decomposing organic material, fungi and many bacteria |
Producer | Plants, and some protists, that convert sunlight into chemical energy (sugar) |
Diversity | Having a large variety of plant and animal species - required for a healthy ecosystem |
Habitat | A specific place or natural conditions in which a plant or animal lives |
