Question | Answer |
Phenotype | Physical characteristics. |
Genotype | Genetic make-up or actual gene readings. |
Heredity | Characteristics we inherit from our parents. |
Dominant | An allele whose form of a trait always shows up if the dominant allele is present. |
Recessive | Allele whose trait only shows up if the dominant is not present. |
Monohybrid Cross | Crossing one trait. |
Dihybrid Cross | Crossing two traits. |
Complete Dominance | A kind of dominance wherein the dominant allele completely masks the effect of the recessive allele in heterozygous condition. |
Incomplete Dominance | (Neither is dominant). The phenotype of a heterozygote is a blend of the two homozygotes. |
Codominance | Both alleles are equally expressed in the heterozygote. |
Sex-linked Traits | Traits that are carried on sex chromosomes. |
Heterozygous | An organism with two different alleles for a trait. |
Homozygous | An organism with two identical alleles. |
Law of Segregation | Sperm or egg only give one alelle towards the offspring. |
Allele | Different expressions of a trait; specifics. |
Gene | Section of DNA that codes for a trait. |
Law of Independent Assortment | Each pair of alleles separate independently of the other. |
Pedigree | Shows a pattern of inheritance in a family for a specific trait (phenotype). |
Punnett Square | Diagram that shows the possible genetic combinations for offspring. |
