| Question | Answer |
| Capillary Action | The combined force of attraction among water molecules and with the molecules of surrounding materials. |
| Polar Molecule | A molecule that has electrically charged areas. |
| Surface Tension | The tightness across the surface of water that is caused by the polar molecules pulling on one another. |
| Specific Heat | The amount of heat needed to increase the temperature of a certain mass of substance by 1*C |
| Groundwater | Water that fills the cracks and spaces in underground soil and rock layers |
| Tributary | A smaller stream or river that feeds into a main river |
| Watershed | The land area that supplies water to a river stream. |
| Acid Rain | Rain or another form of precipitation that is more acidic than normal caused by the release of molecules of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide into the air. |
| Non-polar Molecule | Term applied to hydrophobic (Water-fearing) molecules that cannot bond with water. |
| Reservoir | A lake that stores water for human use |
| Eutrophication | The process by which nutrients in a lake build up over time causing an increase in the growth of algae. |
| Permeable | Characteristic of material that is full of tiny connected air spaces that water can seep through. |
| Impermeable | A characteristic of materials such as clay and granite through which water does not easily pass |
| Saturated Zone | A layer of permeable rock or soil in which the cracks and pores are totally filled with water |
| Unsaturated Zone | A layer of rocks and soil above the water table in which the pores the pores contain air as well |
| Water Table | The top of the saturated zone or depth to the groundwater under Earth's surface. |
| Cohesion | The sticking together of particles of the same substance |
| Aquitard | a low permeability geologic formation within a stratigraphic sequence that functions as the upper or lower boundary of a groundwater flow system or aquifer. |
| Aquifer | An underground layer of rock or soil that holds water. |
| Conservation | The practice using less of a resource so that it will not be used up. |
| Water Quality | The degree of purity water, determined by measuring the substances in water besides water molecules. |
| Pollutant | A substance that causes pollution. |
| Point Source | A specific source of pollution that can be identified. |
| Non-point Source | A widely spread source of pollution that is difficult to link to a specific point of origin. |
| Pesticide | A chemical intended to kill insects and other organisms that damage crops. |
| Adhesion | The action or process of adhering to a surface or object. |
